Lavarini Faces Player Refusals as Poland Preps for 2026

Analiza

Italian coach Stefano Lavarini, now at the helm of the Polish women’s national volleyball team, unveiled his squad for the 2026 cycle. Shortly after the announcement, a number of players declined the call‑up, sparking a heated debate within the sport’s community. Veteran setter Joanna Wołosz publicly criticized the situation, while Lavarini defended his selection policy. He highlighted that chronic absences have plagued the team every year except during the Olympic season, when the roster was fully available. The squad recently secured a fourth‑place finish at the European Championship, a result that both reassured and intensified expectations for the upcoming campaign.

Kontekst i Tło

Lavarini stressed that each refusal must be evaluated individually, warning that persistent turnover hampers the development of a stable playing style. He explained the exclusion of experienced attacker Malwina Smarzek, citing personal reasons, and justified the promotion of young opposite Maja Koput. The coach warned that without greater continuity, the team may struggle to advance beyond the quarter‑finals in future tournaments. Nevertheless, the recent European success shows the squad’s potential when a core group can stay together. The controversy underscores a broader challenge for Polish volleyball: balancing star power with squad cohesion.

InfoHub notes that the coach’s candidness is a double‑edged sword – it may force accountability but also risks deepening rifts. The real test will be whether the federation can reconcile individual ambitions with collective goals.
